I work with students in grades 3-5 using a program called Accelerated Math. The program is designed to work on academic holes in each child's learning. The program is computer based and customizes assignments to each students level. It even alerts you to when the students is having trouble with a skill so that you can provide one-on-one support until they "get it".
I work with Teir II students, which means they have been identified as being below grade level and are in need of extra small group support.
These children worked so hard every day and their hard work paid off during EOG's. I was astonished at the amount of growth they made from October to May. I had kids pass the EOG who have never passed before and that is a phenomenal feat in its self. As a grade level 3rd grade went from 23% (2014-15) to 54% Grade Level Proficient in 2015-16 and 18% (2014-15) to 40% Collage and Career ready in 2016. 5th grade went from 32% (2014-15) to 54% Grade Level Proficient in 2015-16 and 18% (2014-15) to 42% College and Career ready in 2015-16.
My Project
Last year I learned that many of my children worked better when they were sitting in bean bags or stretched out on the floor with their computers and white boards. Sitting at at table or desk made many of them antsy which featured other hand led to discipline issues. We were able to share supplies with the library last year, however this year we will have our own space which is awesome but we are loosing a carpeted area as well as access to bean bags. In seeing the amazing gains my students made last year I feel that creating a similar environment will provide a comfortable learning space for different types of learns. This space along with my support will hopefully give these students the confidence in their math skills that the greatly need to ensure academic success.
