My students are wonderful and amazing youths. With the pandemic going on this year, it is difficult to give them a warm and safe environment that they feel comfortable in. They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically but my room feels like a dungeon with hand-made posters.
I try to supply my classroom with my own funds but being a second-year teacher and it is difficult to come up with the funds to buy all of the classroom necessities for my students to have an amazing learning experience.
Our school is in a small community that had a downturn in the economy in the 2000s. We are slowly growing and desperately need support from the community to help our classes.
My Project
My goal is to have decorations to help make an inviting room and have better lessons for my students on the subjects we are learning. All of these items will be used for the students to create a better learning environment and for organizational strategies for myself to make a better learning environment for my students. Often my classroom is mistaken for another subject because I am unable to afford historical posters. Having brightly colored motivational posters and sentence stems will help students persevering in their studies and help them write better in my class. The clock is to swap the original school clock to something more difficult to read so students don't start packing up before the bell rings. The frame is to hold pictures of students working together.
The stuffed camel is for a specific lesson on how the straw broke the camel's back.
Having a visual while telling the story brings it to life. Alphonse the Camel teaches students causation progression, the aim is to familiarize students with different ways of understanding cause and consequence, and demonstrate how to use them as analytical tools for understanding change over time. The main character of our story is Alphonse the camel and he dies from hubris or the amount of work the owner puts on poor Alphonse. It depends on the perspective. This is an important lesson on gaining new perception of causation.
I have a back table where I have small group instructions or teacher-student meetings but I have no seats for them. With the stools that I would like, students just have to bring their stuff and not lug a bulky chair and risk getting hurt. We are also now 1:1 and are encouraged to use laptops in class. My current activities are not compatible with online.
