My Students
I have the absolute privilege of being the guidance counselor for the best group of K-8 students. Our school is very small, so aside from counseling the students on my caseload, I have the unique opportunity to go into each classroom once a week for 30 minutes and do a character education lesson. This has allowed all students, even the kindergarteners, to know who I am and what my role is at the school. I love walking through the hallways because students of all ages will give me a high five or a hug and say hello!
When I finished my graduate studies in School Counseling, I walked across that graduation stage with the thought in my head, "This is for all students who walk the school hallways and feel alone." I am often sought out by students who just need to vent or decompress - whether it is an issue with their studies or with their friends.
I love every second of what I do, and I am tirelessly dedicated to making sure that all of my students feel happy, safe, and confident in themselves!
My Project
I inherited a wonderful space from the previous school counselor. I love my office, but much of it is outdated - including the furniture. Currently, I have a desk and a table for the students to sit at that are in much older condition - I have to cover them with a tablecloth, which makes the already small room seem cluttered. I have little storage space for my materials and the space. I do have are rolling metal shelves, which I try to cover with a curtain.
Comfortable, simple furniture in this space would create the clear environment in which students feel safe to share.
A new, clean desk and a simple new table for the students to sit at would tremendously aid this vision. Additionally, some bright, colorful stools would make the room appear more kid-friendly, and the stools can be easily stored under the table, unlike the current chairs in my room. There are times when I am dong a conflict resolution between a larger group of students, and there often isn't enough space for all of them to sit. The tree trunk seats would be a great asset to my office so that all students could sit. The seats also offer a flexible seating option for all of my students.
Finally, many of my counseling related games and activities are not up-to-date. I would love to have some fresh, updated materials to help my students in the best possible way!
