My students need a comfortable sitting area with a new rug for community building and a quality class library for literacy.

My Students
This fall I have the exciting opportunity to teach kindergarten in a brand new school! The school is Title One and the students come from a large array of ethnic and economic backgrounds. The students get an opportunity to be fully immersed with Spanish in our bilingual education program. That is, the kindergarteners spend half of their day in an English speaking classroom and the other half in a Spanish speaking classroom. We are working to create global citizens with twenty-first century skills, and it is truly exciting to see the positive impact of bilingualism on their overall cognitive development
My Project
My students need a comfortable area to engage in positive community building and literacy activities. As part of Responsive Classroom, our class holds Morning Meetings everyday with the goal of building a strong community of lifelong learners. Students also need a comfortable, carpeted space for exploring literacy in various ways, whether that be whole class read alouds, partner reading, or individual reading. Without the rug, my kindergartners will be forced to sit on the hard floor, which will make it very difficult to focus and have a positive attitude. As a first year teacher, I also need all the help that I can get in developing a quality classroom library as my kindergarteners begin their reading journey!
