This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this class there are 19 beautiful young boys full of potential and energy. We start our day by saying "In this class we are family, we speak kindly, we work harder and smarter, we know we are world changers". These boys are told from day one that they are chosen to be in this class because they are the best, and we must act like the best to show everyone else. My class is comprised of students from different cultures and different economic backgrounds. 100% of the students in my classroom receive free breakfast and lunch and many of them face difficult circumstances outside of the classroom. Life as a 6 year old is difficult enough in this world, but when outside factors begin to play a negative role, the classroom becomes even more important. Teaching life skills and love along with reading and writing is what the day is all about.

My Project

You know that feeling you get when you walk into a Starbucks? It is like the store is designed for all types of coffee drinkers of the world. There are big comfy couches, tables with chairs, a breakfast bar with stools, and other types of seating. My goal for this year is to create an environment within the classroom that invites students in and gets them excited about reading. Personally, siting in a stiff chair and a cold desk is not engaging to me. However, when I choose a good book I like to curl up with a blanket and start reading. I think it is more important that we teach these students to be life long learners rather than teach them how to be compliant by reading in a designated spot for a designated time. Our classroom is typically kept very cold and the blankets would be accessible to the students during read to self time. We have flexible seating in my classroom where the students have the option to stand at their table, sit on Ottomans, or sit on the floor. The Ottomans that I currently have are very broken and will need some new ones if this seating will work. The clipboards I have requested will be used to supplement another project I had funded earlier. We use clipboards in order to accommodate our flexible seating. Students can carry their board with them wherever they choose to sit. With class size very high this year I have two students who do not have the materials they need.
