My Students

Our students come from diverse backgrounds. Some students can walk to school where others need to get on the school bus at 6:00am to make it to school by 7:30am as we live in a rural community. Our students are active teens and some have to take on a lot of responsibilities for themselves, their household, and younger siblings. Covid 19 has hit some of our families severely.

A large population of our students households work in the service industry and casinos.

Many heads of households lost their jobs and students were hit hard emotionally and academically when our schools were shut down. Some students in our area do not have access to the internet, so staying up on schooling was difficult if not possible. These struggles continued at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year when we were put into a hybrid model and only saw students every other day.

We are finding our students have big gaps academically, emotionally, and behaviorally. We are seeing our students dysregulated and this is requiring more time, support and materials to be able assist students to fill the educational, emotional and behavioral needs.

My Project

The denisty cubes, balance and other lab equipment will be used to fulfill the NGSS Science standard MS-PS1- Matter and Its Interactions as well as other NGSS standards that require the use of measurement accuracy. Students are lacking readble equipment to complete the standards accurately. The flexible seating materials and soft light covers will help students who come in dysregulated from the stresses of school and home life that was affected by COVID19 to learn how to self-regulate. These materials will aide the students by creating a safe and calm environment where students can take charge of their own learning.
