This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the most important things for me, as a teacher, is to make sure that my students get the most genuine, real world experience possible. Obviously, taking 28 students on a field trip all over the world is unrealistic, however, allowing them to access the world through different outlets, is not.

I want to provide a classroom for my students that enables them to take a journey to a different country, a different time era, a different state, all while remaining in the classroom.

I want my students to be able to open a book and get lost in it. I want them to read a non fiction magazine and learn about different parts of the world. The goal is to create a well rounded group of children who will be given real world experiences, regardless of their socio-economic status.

My students attend a school in the heart of San Diego. 100% of our student population receives free lunch. Since I cannot take them into the world and show them all of these amazing things, please help me to bring it to them.

My Project

Students are asked to sit for long periods of time, either on the floor or at their seat. Most times it does not take long before they start to fidget and wander around trying to get their wiggles out. This disrupts their learning time as well as get them off track, wasting valuable teaching time. Research shows that the immediate benefits of of flexible seating include increased engagement and motivation in learning activities, using up extra energy, improving metabolism, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving overall posture. The items I have chosen will do just that. Each seating option gives the students the freedom to wiggle and move as much as they wish, all while staying seated and participating in their learning. I have chosen 4 different types of seating. A rolling ball chair, a stationary ball seat, wobble cushions, and stools. This provides different types of seating to help meet the comfort ability of all students.

These flexible seating options will help my students feel comfortable in their learning environment as well as help keep them focused.

If given the opportunity to have these types of options in our class, I am confident my students will be more engaged in what they are doing and less worried about being off task.
