This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is one of the schools in Houston ISD that was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. My students could be best described as survivors. Not only in the wake of Harvey, but it is just who they are on a daily basis. Some of my scholars’ families lost everything and had to be evacuated from their homes. On top of everything else they experienced during Harvey, our campus had to be relocated to two separate locations 7 miles away from our school, because of extensive damage. We are currently housed at a middle school. However, in the wake of all the devastation around them, they are excited to be in school. In order to bring some normalcy back into the classroom, I need to reinvent what was lost.
98% of my scholars are at risk of failing, some are two or more grade levels below.
However, every day all my scholars arrive on time for class and eager to learn. It is my desire to recreate our classroom environment and bring back a sense of normalcy to my scholars.
My Project
The flood waters from Hurricane Harvey caused extensive damage to our campus. As a result, everything on our campus was lost; supplies, equipment, instructional materials, furniture and carpeting. My scholars deserves a comfortable gathering place so that they do not have to sit on cold tile.
Our classroom needs a new, comfortable rug to utilize when gathering together for whole group literacy meetings.
We are housed at a middle school that has tile flooring, which has eliminated our meeting time, because my scholars would have to sit directly on the floor. A new rug will give my scholars somewhere to sit during a time of day where they look forward to listening to me read aloud to them and discussing with peers the books we read together. A new rug will provide better discussion and listening opportunities for my scholars, because they will be gathered closely together and not spread out in the classroom.
