Comfort with the School Counselor

Help me give my students that have suffered trauma new ways to work through their trauma and become resilient so they can thrive. The tools I requested allow for the students to play and process through those experiences.

My Students

My students are all inner city youth with the elementary sitting in the middle of subsidized housing. All of the students qualify for both free breakfast and lunch. Many stay at school for free dinner and the after school programming.

Most of my students love coming to school because they feel loved, safe and comfortable at school.

For some, school is the only place they feel safe and loved. Too many of the students have endured extreme trauma: physical, emotional, sexual abuse, extreme poverty or have witnessed domestic violence at a very young age.

My Project

My main goal is to create an environment where students feel welcomed and secure, so that they may maintain a healthy balance in their academic and social/emotional life. For this to happen we need for our students to feel comfortable processing their trauma and learn self-regulation skills. At our school, our focus is on making lifelong learners and leaders that are resilient and not defined by the trauma that many have experienced.

Many of my students have suffered severe trauma in their young lives and tell me that they only feel safe at school.

No matter how bad things get for some of my students, they show up every day ready to try their best and to learn, they often have a smile on their face, and are kind to their teachers and friends. I want to not only support them but to celebrate their positive choices, and build their resilience.

I selected puppets that my students would feel resemble them or their families. I also selected several counseling games that will be utilized in groups working on developing self regulation skills and books to read during class lessons that will help develop the whole child.
