My Students
My classroom is place where I encourage reading. I want students to be life-long learners, and I believe reading is the way to ignite this process. I assign certain texts and allow them to choose others on their own. We need a place for reading to happen.
My students are high school age.
Some are college-bound, but many of them are not. We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is on free or reduced lunch. By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. I want to make my room a comfortable place where they can just relax and not have to worry about all the things going on outside of the building.
My Project
My students will use these cushions and pillows to read and work collaboratively. My floor is carpeted, but it has cement underneath and no padding. That doesn't make for conducive environment for comfort while learning. With these items students will be able to sit in an area that makes them comfortable, which will help their engagement and interest in either the reading or group work.
Students learn better and are more engaged when they are comfortable.
Comfort is not always sitting in a hard chair at a table. I am hoping this will make my classroom more of a refuge for students and therefore increase their engagement.
