My Project

Students build classroom community and engage in group work throughout their day of learning. A large carpet area provides many students a choice of where they will learn the best in the classroom such as; different desks, tables, seats, which includes sitting on the carpet with clipboards or lap desks.

Every morning students sit in a circle and engage in a social emotional learning lesson to build our classroom community.

Providing a large, comfortable carpet is essential for motivating students and providing a space that all students can comfortably feel included in the classroom community.

During lessons and workshop, flexible seating provides students choice as to how they learn best. Many students prefer to sit on the floor, up front and center, to limit distractions during the lessons. Also, during workshop, students engage in small groups to solve problems and discuss solutions. A variety of locations provides choice and increases engagement for the students in their learning.

Providing students with choice in their seating has made positive impacts in my students' learning. This choice of seating has increased student engagement, limited distractions, and improved completion of work than if they were just sitting at their desk.
