My Students

My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. We are starting to see a large number of EL families, many of which are newcomers to the United States. They come to school eager to learn each day, and they are excited to see what the day has in store for them.

I teach at a Title I school in Illinois where 100% of the students receive free and reduced priced lunch.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can to become successful one day.

My Project

Last year I had 6 newcomers, along with my other EL students, that spoke little to no English and that number is growing within my classroom each year.

These materials will allow me to create a flexible environment that will allow students to chose where they sit and work together.

That is especially important for EL students because they need time and space to converse with other students to develop language skills. Most of my newcomers have been nervous or apprehensive to talk to their friends within my classroom. With these materials, students will be placed in a situation where they are more comfortable and more willing to converse and learn with other students.

My lap desks will be used both as alternative seating and as a place to cooperatively play games. Students will use these desks to practice language with friends while having fun. The stools will be used at a table designated to fun activities in which students play and work together. This is especially important to my EL group because they need that time to develop language. I will also be using the laminating sheets to laminate picture directions, an EL support, which will go around my classroom.
