My Students
Our self-contained Autism Classroom is awesome! I have 7 homeroom students as well as 14 other students who will rotate into my classroom for Math classes. These students are all on the Autism Spectrum. My students range from non-verbal to functionally verbal and are at all academic levels. After being full to partially virtual students last year, they are so excited to get into our room and make it their own! They all love to learn, especially Science and Math!
Our school is a mixture of a general education program and an autism program which allows our students the opportunity to be integrated into general education situations as often as possible.
We are a low-income school, servicing a majority of free and reduced-price lunch students.
My Project
My classroom is full of students that come from all economic backgrounds as well as varying levels of independence when it comes to personal hygiene. I think it is important to have a place within our classroom that provides students an opportunity to get what they personally need without having to ask or embarrass themselves.
I have not only had my classroom students request personal hygiene items, but also general education students come from the hallways to ask me if I had any of these items available for them.
I think having a safe place to access these items is so important. I want all students to know that they can come to my classroom to get what they need.
This project also has the added bonus that my students with autism will be able to use the closet as one of their job skills each week. They will be able to take inventory, fill out order forms, stock the shelves with new items and more! This will help prepare them for possible employment after school, which is so important to my students.
