Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a new first-grade teacher looping with my students from kindergarten, I have a unique opportunity to continue nurturing the strong foundation of empathy and compassion we began building together.

The soft seats and rainbow canopy will create cozy, calming spaces that help students regulate their emotions and practice empathy.

These flexible seating options encourage students to recognize and respect others’ needs for comfort, quiet, and spacehelping them learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

The writing center will give students a creative space to express their thoughts and feelings through drawing, storytelling, and journaling. These activities help children reflect on different perspectives, building their understanding of how others may feel or think.

Rainbow visual timers will reduce anxiety around transitions and promote independence. By using these tools and supporting classmates who need more time, students will practice patience, empathy, and responsibility toward one another.

To deepen their compassion, students will participate in read-alouds, discussions, and writing activities focused on people in need—at school, in our community, and beyond. They’ll write kindness notes, make drawings for others, and help care for shared spaces. These actions will teach students how to respond to others’ needs and take steps to ease someone’s struggles.

Students will reflect on compassion through journal entries, group conversations, and classroom behaviors. We’ll celebrate acts of kindness and growth in empathy through “Compassion Shout-Outs,” kindness journals, and small service projects. This is how we'll measure the success of the compassion lesson.

This project will support a safe, expressive, and inclusive environment where students can grow as both learners and compassionate individuals. By fostering emotional awareness, empathy, and purposeful action, I hope to help my students understand the power they have to care for and support one another.
