My Students
We are back to full day, 5 days a week, in person learning this school year! Students are excited to return, learn with each other, and play together. For many students this will be the first time they are back in the classroom since the pandemic started.
We are an urban school that celebrates diversity.
Our student population includes a mix of African American, Latino, and Asian Pacific Islander students. We serve English Language Learners, support special needs through inclusion, and provide strong social-emotional support to all students. Additionally, over 75% of the students attending our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
There are so many things I want to give my students this school year and one of which is comfort in the classroom. This project will provide resources to support my most struggling students in reading, writing, and items to help focus their attention on learning.
This project includes things like nice smelling hand sanitizer, new pencils, and books to match their reading levels and interests.
I want students to experience eating healthier so they begin to feel more focused and settled during class. Part of this project supplies bowls and spoons so I can cut up the school fruit so students can eat it during snack time. Some students come hungry to school and this way students will be fed and can focus on learning. My hope is to provide more healthy options for eating snack to help students focus during class time. Having nice smelling hand sanitizer which is calming can also help students transition from outdoor recess time back into the classroom.
Our class also needs new pencils to write, do their math, and write about the books they are reading. A few students struggle with writing stories about themselves. With some new pencils, they might be more inclined to write. I am also requesting new books based on student interests. When students have books they enjoy at their right reading levels, students are more engaged and can improve their literacy skills. I have many students who are reading one or two grade levels below 3rd grade reading levels and my classroom really needs decodable, phonics types books they can be successful reading.
I am hoping all these little things can add up in my classroom to create a comforting, supportive environment for my most struggling students to thrive.
