My Students
Basketball, Football, Soccer, Oh My! Living in rural Western Montana, our community is centered around school and school activities; the students of our school utilize school facilities before and after school, including weekends. Our school is the central resource for many of our families.
With miles between towns, schools are the primary focus for functions and activities in our area.
It is not uncommon to find students here well before school starts or after the dismissal bell rings. School, to our students, is a home away from home, a place they can count on for safety, warmth and food.
We are a K-12 district currently enrolled with approximately 170 students. Many of our families suffer extreme poverty due to the failing timber industry and lack of sufficient resources in our area. Because of this high poverty rate, our school hosts many activities for families in order to support their basic needs. Open library hours, after school homework programs, beyond the school day enrichment and open gymnasium hours are examples of such. Without such resources, our students and their families would lack educational enrichment opportunities. It is our hope that we can expand these services to continue this necessary support for our students and their families.
My Project
Due to the high number of participation we have in our programs, we have been able to sustain these programs and continue to offer them to our families. However, staffing of such is the biggest expense to the school and equipment is lacking. With funds from donors, our school would be able to continue to offer these enrichment programs to our students.
Our request of playground materials would be used not only during the school day, but in after school and before school programs. Student led games, teacher-instruction focused curriculum, family play time and after-school latch key programs would have access to these materials. The equipment would be monitored by the teacher of instruction.
With these materials, students will continue to be able to have options of play that supports social growth, individual achievement and family connections. As mentioned, the materials purchased would be used frequently by our students and their families to foster this growth and enrichment.
It is our priority to educating the whole person, which includes social and emotional health.
With donors help we can continue to provide this enrichment to our students, to promote well-rounded individuals and to encourage family-child interactions. Without many resources in our area, the school environment and its buildings are the foundation of activities in our community. Your support would provide essential enrichment to our students and families.
