This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen a child struggle to hold a pencil, cut with scissors or not know how to play? I see these children on a daily basis and it is my job to increase their fine motor and play skills. With your help, I can effectively help my students attain life skills.
I am an Occupational Therapist working in an inner city school district in Connecticut.
I work with more than sixty students per week in five different elementary schools. The students I work with have a variety of disabilities including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, developmental delays and learning disabilities. I work every week to increase functional, fine motor/visual motor, play, and sensory processing skills to help improve performance and participation in the classroom. This is a very challenging but rewarding job and I would appreciate any support to help meet the needs of these wonderful children.
My Project
I am requesting an assortment of games to use with my students during our occupational therapy sessions. It's important to meet the needs of all of my students by using these mediums. Many children with autism or other developmental delays, do not know how to play effectively. Additionally, their fine motor skills often suffer as they do not know how to use basic tools and instruments appropriately and effectively. Play is the number one job of children and each session I try to incorporate a variety of play activities. My students need games such as Connect 4, pegboards, and Operation along with others to assist with fine motor skill development as well as imaginative educational play.
Because I work in an inner city, urban school district, these children often are not able to play with developmentally appropriate educational toys. I do not receive a budget for these basic materials and try my best to have the supplies we need but it gets to be costly. I would appreciate any support you can offer.
