Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a mixed population of Hispanic, Native Americans, African Americans, and Caucasian. We are a Title 1 elementary school with 100% free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students come to school in the same clothes every day. Our students do not have an opportunity to experience, extracurricular activities at home or outside of school. We do our best to bring current educational trends to our school to benefit our low-income students.

Our classroom needs an "updated" kitchen/home center so our students can learn and model social living situations.

This will enable more social play, friendships, dealing with conflicts and coming up with resolutions.

My Project

My kindergarten students need a living center that invites "real" play and encourages friendships, conflict resolution, responsibility and overall fun! Child size furniture, play food and dishes add to the real world experience for the child.

A big part of the day is focused around center time.

Learning begins with social play and interaction among peers. Social play has been replaced with computers, cell phones, video games and television. This project promotes a more "hands on" play through a real life center activity.

The power of play as the engine of learning in early childhood and as a vital force for young children's physical, social, and emotional development is beyond question. Yet play is rapidly disappearing from kindergarten and early education as a whole. Focus on our center time, and the way we present it, will enable the goals of the "whole kindergarten" learning process.
