The students in my kindergarten classroom are between the ages of 5 and 6 years old. They primarily come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and attend a school that is located in a poor, rural area of South Carolina. Many students come from a single parent household, in which the parent works more than one job and/or works double shifts. Because of this, the students spend a lot of time with older siblings and/or relatives after school, while parents are working to make ends meet. Our students are hungry to learn about the world and each other.
My Project
Daily 5 is the structure that we use to organize our reading block. During this time, students spend time at several "stations" and work independently or with partners on strengthening their writing, reading, and phonics skills while I am able to pull individual students or small groups.
After several weeks, the students get tired of the games that are in the word work station and their behaviors begin to reflect their complacency.
It is important to be able to spice up these stations and give the students a little variety. Adding these new games to our word work station will surely excite the students and get them excited about learning!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
