My Students
My students are in the Bilingual Maintenance Alternative Program, where the goal is for all learners to become bilingual and bi-literate. Because they are in this program, they have known each other since preschool, and our class is like a family, our classroom like our home.
At my Title 1 school, where 100% of the students receive free and reduced lunches, where there is poverty and uncertainty in the neighborhood, our room is a friendly, familiar haven.
Students feel safe here to learn, explore, and question. They know each other well, and they support each other in this journey to being bi-literate, productive, persevering members of the community.
My Project
Students learn self-regulation when they have choices. Offering a variety of comfortable seating options within a colorful, dynamic environment will help students feel supported and engaged in our class.
Having flexible seating options, such as wobble seats, yoga balls, stools, nooks, and pillows can help students maintain focus and get the most out of their learning.
Students are less often required to sit in a desk and attend to the teacher. Students work independently, collaborate in small groups, and seek partners for support.
A welcoming classroom which encourages collaboration, flexibility, and choice will help students develop into self-regulated, focused learners.
