My Students

When I was hired as the music teacher, I was told by the principal, "We have a tradition of having every student perform on our stage every year. Can you do that?" Fourteen years later, I am happy to report that each one of our 520+ students have a performance opportunity every year.

I am the general music teacher for more than 520 students in grades k-5.

We are a Title I school, with about 46% students qualifying for free or reduced lunch this year. We have about 50 students who are considered homeless, some of whom live in old motels, and about 10% of our students do not speak English as their first language. However, all of my students love to sing and play instruments and dance, and being in a grade level performance is the highlight of their school year, for both my students and their families. Our school was built in 1931, as a k-12 school, so we are very fortunate to have a "real" auditorium, which seats 540 people. I try to come up with performances that connect to each grade's classroom curriculum, so that the music the students are learning for their grade level performance will enhance and enrich their classroom curriculum.

My Project

Our second grade students do a show called "In the Pages of a Book," which is a salute to the work of Dr. Seuss. Some of our parents wrote the script and lyrics, and I selected the music for each class to perform. Our PTA has provided funding for a backdrop, which parents painted, and wonderful costumes for each child to wear. The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Horton the Elephant, and Sam-I-Am are just some of the characters featured in this fun and colorful show. Each class has a "spotlight" number on the stage during the course of the performance. I do not have any dance training and would love to be able to hire a professional dance teacher to choreograph and teach each class a dance to perform as part of this show. A local ballet academy has provided choreographers for our school plays in previous years, and our students have adored their time working with these dance professionals. Our students learn teamwork as they practice their dance steps.

For some of our students, the only time that their parents come to our school is when the child has a performance.

These students, and their families, feel a tremendous sense of pride in the accomplishment of their performance. Even the shyest students are able to "shine" as they take to the stage with their classmates. A single arts experience can change a child for a lifetime. Thank you so much for helping my second grade students become little "stars!"
