My Students
My students have a thirst for knowledge. They are so ready to step into a more challenging and competitive world. In order for them to be successful it is my duty to prepare them.
My school is really diverse .
I have student population from low income family too. Sometimes their only outing can be to the school and only positive interaction is with their teacher. They have thirst for knowledge and want to do well. They have the right to learn and do well do and get all the resources needed to excel.
My Project
We are doing the stoichiometry unit in chemistry. The students need a scientific calculator to work with exponents and other large numbers. Every now and then I create a PowerPoint with lots of example problems. Students are given time to solve the problems and put the answers on a white board. The issue that I have been seeing is that the students are spending too much time doing the math by hand. I would much rather go through more problems than wait for them to finish calculating simple math by hand.
By receiving calculators, the students can focus on the process and concepts of the questions asked rather wasting their precious class time to do simple math problems by hand.
Also, there is a greater chance of getting the wrong answers if the problem is done by hand. In the acid and base unit the students need to find the logarithm and they need calculators for that .
