Combining Art and Literature

Help me give my students more wonderful books about art and connect literature to their art lessons. From story books to informative books about important African American artists, these books will make teaching and learning more exciting!

My Students

My students come to art class excited to expand their horizons, learn about art, and to create. I strive to treat them as if they are accomplished artists, and their work reflects this attitude.

Our school has a unique teaching model focusing on life-long learning, with multi-age classrooms and adult mentors.

Students master each learning benchmark before moving to the next level. Our school is part of a high-performing network of schools in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. Our students come from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. We receive free breakfast and lunch and school-wide Title I services.

My Project

I am excited to be expanding my library in the Art Room. I love having the ability to combine literature with another subject matter: art. I use some of the books as a basis for an art lesson, and others to teach about a specific art movement or artist. My students are free to read from my library when they finish their artwork. Of course their hands have to be clean!

I am looking forward to Black History Month 2020 and have found wonderful books about Clementine Hunter, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

I can't wait to read these books to them. My students love to hear these stories, and then their learning is further enhanced with an art lesson.
