My Project

In 7th‑grade writing workshop, we treat colored pencils, highlighters, and markers as visual thinking tools. After students draft in regular pencil, they “rainbow‑code” key elements with colored pencils: yellow traces the exposition, orange marks rising action, red the climax, green the falling action, and blue the resolution, turning a plot mountain into an instant pacing check. When we work on analysis, blue underlines text evidence while regular pencil holds commentary; weak commentary later gets circled in red marker so students know exactly where to revise. During descriptive writing, peer partners swap papers and highlight sensory language—green for vivid visuals, orange for sounds, pink for touch/taste/smell—making any uncolored lines obvious gaps to fill.

Markers help polish and publish.

Final drafts tape to a “graffiti wall” where classmates give feedback in thin‑tip markers—questions in blue, compliments in green, suggestions in purple—so each writer leaves with a multicolored cascade of peer notes. Before posting essays in hallways, students add splashy marker titles and colored‑pencil borders that match tone (warm reds for persuasive pieces, cool blues for reflective memoirs). These quick, color‑coded routines let students see structure, sensory detail, and revision needs, transforming abstract writing skills into concrete, memorable visuals.
