My class is an Autistic preschool class with 8 students who range in age from 3-5. Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. There are a number of methods and techniques used in the education of autistic children.
The students in my class are all Autistic preschool students ranging in age from 3-5.
Many of the students are non-verbal students. They learn best from the use of visuals and hands-on materials they can explore. During the school day, they have work sessions where they work 1:1 or 2:1 with an adult. During these times, they work on cognitive, language, fine motor, and communication skills. They need a variety of materials to work with on a variety of skills. Many of the materials used in my Autistic preschool classroom have been purchased by the staff in the classroom themselves.
My Project
The resources I have requested will help the students in the classroom learn to identify shapes, colors, letters, and numbers. The Shape Discovery, Number Discovery, and Color Discovery activities I have put into my cart will help students with identification of shapes, numbers and colors while also working on sorting by these attributes. The Learn to Rhyme Picture Puzzles will help the higher functioning students with literacy and learning to rhyme by having hands-on puzzles to complete where they match the rhyming pictures. The A-Z Letter Photo Cards requested show about 4 pictures that start with each letter, this helps the students to identify letters and work on vocabulary building. We also work on using different materials in different areas of the classroom to generalize their knowledge of the same skill. Having more materials for teaching these skills will give the students more changes and opportunities to generalize the skill.
The donations of Shape Discovery, Number Discovery, Color Discovery activities, Learning to Rhyme Picture Puzzles and A-Z Letter Cards will improve my classroom by giving us more materials to use to teach these important identification, language and sorting skills.
The students will learn that an apple can look different but is still an apple. They will be able to use the donations to recognize and generalize colors, shapes, letters, numbers and objects.
