My Students

All of my students are currently in the hospital as a result of illness or injury. They are attending school bedside while receiving medical care and various treatments. The students are often distracted from learning because of pain, medication, sadness, and anger. The children in my class are from New York and the surrounding areas. We also accept and treat children from other states and from out of this county.

My students, four to twenty-one years of age, are currently hospitalized for a variety of childhood diseases and accidents.

They receive medical and educational intervention daily while in the hospital. It is our goal to reunite students with their friends, families, and home district school classmates. My kids are diagnosed with diabetes, physical delays, cognitive and social delays as a result of accidents and illness. Students have a wide range of challenges which are a result of current illness and new life-altering diagnosis.

I work for NYC DOE Hospital Schools which supports teachers in thirty-eight NYC Hospitals. My students are warriors and they fight the fight every day, pushing past the pain. My students are often newly diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as diabetes and seizure disorders.

My Project

My students are sick in the hospital with various conditions that cause a great deal of pain, discomfort and distress to both them selves and their family members. By using Crayons, paint, glue sticks, and paper arts as an entry point to learning attending school in the hospital becomes a positive experience. When children are allowed to create and express their feeling through the arts all of the worries about academics fades away. Art in the hospital just makes sense. Drawing and illustrating while writing a personal narrative gives the students a little control over their environment. Crayons and paint will be used to create illustrations for personal narratives which will be used for language arts. The Triangular crayons are easy for little hands to grip. For children who have suffered a stroke fine motor skills are often compromised making it difficult to hold a crayon. The multicultural crayons are very important. When children draw themselves they want skin tone accurate. Bright colored paper and paint will keep the attention on the art/Language Arts lesson and less on IV's and medical treatment,

Our experiences with children in the hospital are opportunities to make a change in the world and the way children react and engage with others for their future.

Allowing children to color the characters in their stories with the real-life colors of skin tones rich in browns, tans and mahogany allows children see and understand that the world is not black and white but many shades in-between.

Art can easily be integrated into all subject areas and grade levels. The use of art as a cognitive tool allows for easy assessment of skills making the academic lesson more direct and to the point.
