Our rural elementary STEAM students in grades K-5 love visiting our STEAM class every week for 60 minutes. It is the perfect space for hands-on learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
We start our class reconnecting with one another, learning about the day's challenge/activity and expectations, and participating in a conversation that aims to inspire teams.
Once students have learned about the day's challenge, they form teams and start brainstorming solutions. Using materials available in our room they work through the Engineering Design Process to work out their solution.
My Project
Starting this year, our 5K-5th grade students participate in an elementary-wide Financial Literacy project in STEAM class. This year we created food truck businesses, complete with menus and signage! Our markers are well used, and won't be available for next year's project.
Adding colorful signage and business-related media helps our students to sell their product - an important part of successful business management!
These markers will be used to create signage, menus, brochures, and other media content for our annual Financial Literacy STEAM Challenge.
We do use the markers for other challenges as well. But, they come at a cost! This means that when teams choose to utilize materials from our marker wall, they must incorporate it into their budget.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
