This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students amaze me everyday! They are so much fun and very personable. They love to learn and try new things. Their favorite types of activities include collaboration, creativity, and anything that is unconventional! They are problem solvers and enjoy building off of each others' ideas.
My students need an engaging and fun way to practice writing in the classroom.
Our curriculum was overhauled this last year and writing was given the least amount of love. For the upcoming school year, I am looking forward to coming up with a new approach to writing that can help them to learn the basics and conventions of writing without forcing them to all write about the exact same thing. These journals provide structure, yet allow the student to respond in their own way.
The paragraph journals will be used everyday during independent work time for students to work on writing a paragraph each week. Each day has a different step for the students to follow from brainstorming to writing to revising. The colored pencils add a fun twist to the assignment as the students will be able to color code their introductory and concluding sentences, as well as, their detail/reasoning sentences. At the end of the week, these journals will provide me with insight on what skills my students need to continue to work on and what they are doing well at. In addition, the paragraph journals can lead to individual writing conferences in the moment. One of my favorite aspects is that the journals lasts all 36 weeks of school, so it essential becomes a portfolio of each student's writing over time.
