This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Little cards, game pieces, instruction sheets- all of these manipulatives and hands-on items take time to create. Laminating them ensures that they will last. Schools used to have industrial-sized laminators. Getting anything laminated was a process! Pocket laminators have been a game-changer, especially in the last 10-15 years. These small machines are brilliant; they can fit items the size of a standard sheet of paper, they heat quickly, and are easily portable. No more waiting in line during a quick 35 minute planning block to access the one laminating machine available! In my 30 year teaching career, I can remember purple mimeograph machines. Now, we just hit print with wi-fi. I recall when computers were locked in one special room at school. Now everyone has their own computer/streaming device! Pocket laminators are as revolutionary for teachers and I embrace these advances.

I love my laminating machine and how it makes paper "manipulatives"- the small items that we use over and over in class-sturdy and long-lasting for my students.

Unfortunately, after years of use, my classroom laminator no longer works. I bring things to an office store for lamination but their service takes several days and can cost more than $10 per item. A teacher store offers on-site lamination at 39 cents per linear foot, but this also adds up quickly. I use Sharpie markers to create fun, colorful items for my students to use during math and literacy work times. My students are English Language Learners, so I provide many vocabulary words and language games to help develop their English skills. The built-in cutter in this particular laminator helps me to quickly prepare small-sized cards. Having these tools will help me give my students what they need in a colorful classroom environment that invites their hands-on exploration.
