Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Black and white is so blah; my students love color! My non-verbal students who use pictures to communicate are better able to express their needs when the pictures represent exactly what they want. My students are engaged and are more willing to practice their speech words when pictures are colorful.
I service a variety of special education students who have varied communication needs.
We are at a school that is in a lower income part of the city and my students struggle to have basic needs met, let alone colorful communication needs. When they have pictures that are colorful and bright and are more representative of what they see in the "real" world they are able to communicate easier. On a daily basis they are excited to show me how much they have grown and how much their communication abilities have grown. Their worlds consist of "gray area" on a daily basis, and I would love to give them MORE COLOR!
My Project
My students will use the materials I create in communication books, speech sound therapy books, and materials created to engage them in story time. Without color, these materials are less engaging and are not representative of what they see in the "real" world. My students' communication abilities will grow, their speech sound production will improve, and story time will be more engaging and fun for all with ink and a laminator.
Donations to my project will help me create colorful pictures that will open up a world of communication for those students who use pictures to express their wants and needs on a daily basis.
