This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an awesome school community of approximately 400 awesome students and 25 awesome and motivated teachers. Our students live in an urban public school district where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and snack. Many of them come from very low income families and are also faced with other issues at home.
Even faced with those circumstances, the students come to school ready to learn from our awesome teachers and literacy leaders who are ready to teach!
My Project
With the development of the Common Core Standards for each state, literacy standards have become harder to achieve for urban students with less money and materials than more affluent school districts. Close reading is an effective reading strategy to help students "dig deeper" into a more complex text for a much better understanding of what is being read.
The laptop desk cart will display a recently donated document camera to help students see "up close" as I teach them what to look for when reading nonfiction text.
The highlighters are the "tools" that will help them "dig deeper" while being instructed on what to look for when reading certain parts of the text.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
