This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade Algebra 1 and Algebra Readiness. 88% of the population is on free or reduced lunch, and our test scores have been low for a while now (while they have been increasing over the past few years, we are still way below where we need to be).
Because of this, I am trying every method possible to get the students excited about math, or at least willing to work hard to understand a subject they all are required to take to graduate from high school and make it to college. I am doing this in a variety of ways, but there our students are so diverse in how they learn it is hard to reach them all in a span of 51 minutes a day.
I have used technology to hook in those students who have found math to be too challenging in the past, or students who did not even want to take a little interest in trying to work. I am now focusing on the little things, and I have seen research that suggests color is linked to learning. Research shows that color influences the way we see and process information, and it can improve our ability to remember. And I have also see this in my own experience. When I have used colored paper instead of white paper in my classroom I saw an increase in homework completion, and more class participation. Sadly, our school does not have a budget for colored paper, so I would have to pay out of my own pocket to get the paper, which is very difficult to do for 150 students.
I know your donation will help ensure that my students have every chance to be successful, and prove that even the little things make a difference.
