Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students avoid the time consuming backpack search and recovery mission.

My students attend a 2,000 student inner-city span school (6 to 12).

We are a Title I (high poverty) school and many students are the first in their family to enter high school. We are college prep, trying to bridge the gap between little college exposure and being college ready in four years.

My Project

My students need colored paper to help them organize their learning in Biology class. The majority of students enter my freshman Biology class lacking a well developed set of organizational skills. It is with sadness that I watch numerous students frantically searching their paper filled backpacks for the homework assignment that they need to turn in. Often they miss the turn in deadline because even though they completed it they cannot find it among all of the other stuff they have in their backpack. The use of colored paper to organize their Biology notebook will help them have a designated place for each type of assignment. Also at the beginning of each month I provide a calendar on a certain color of paper that the students write their daily assignments on. This allows both the students and the parents to easily identify which tasks need to be completed by a certain date.

I have found that the better organized my students are the easier the transition to high school is for them.

Using colored paper will help my students become more organized which will enable them to easily locate assignments and review what is due on specific dates.
