My Students

Diversity and inclusion is the mantra that drives each member of our school's staff. Our students' ethnic roots span the globe; Turkish, Russian, Ukraine, Spanish, African American, and many more. Here we see every skin color and many dialects and yet we all come together to work for a common understanding. This marriage of backgrounds expands into our curriculum. While we emphasize a strong scientific base we also integrate this with the arts and humanities. The artists become scientists and scientists discover creativity through the arts. Many of my students struggle with learning, social and emotional disabilities. The economic background is wide and includes many students on the free and reduced-price lunch program.

At our school students strive to develop the intellectual, linguistic, cultural, interpersonal, and advocacy skills needed to succeed in a global future.

They nurture each other through clubs, after-school projects, activities, and a hope squad whose student members are trained to intervene for a peer in crisis.

They win awards in Robotics, host a yearly STEM fest, win art contests, display great musical abilities, and last year our 6th graders beat out Juniors and Seniors in high school.

My Project

Color is a big part of an art room. As I teach color and color theory it is hard to show what I am teaching without printables the students can use individually. Often I use laminated teaching tools such as color wheel, examples of the color schemes, color mixing charts and so on. Without a color printer in my room, however, it becomes quite difficult to have these tools at the ready. Furthermore, I have been wanting to find ways to celebrate the work that my online students create and submit electronically. Having a larger format printer will help me to do this. The in-class students can show what they have done as they are present but the online students are left out of this learning experience. I have tried to have online students bring their projects in but that is not feasible for all of them.

With a color printer and laminator in my room I can prepare teaching tools for each student and I can help at home students be showcased as well as in-class students.

This tool will put more of the learning process into the hands of each student. They become mailable to at home students and all are literally looking at the same page. Having a printed item in your hand rather than digital gives a better color control and makes the learning more hands on. Additionally, I have been wanting to add book publishing and creating to the curriculum. Students will have more avenues of expression. Expression through art has been so vital for my students through all the turmoil that has been added to them because of Covid and social unrest. They can use color, textures and design to say what they are feeling and share ideas.
