This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Visual aids in a classroom can be a critical tool in educating students with special needs. Visual aids are tools that help me as a teacher adjust learning to meet my students' individual needs and education plan, and it has the power to provide optimum support that students with special needs require.
I am a first year Special Education teacher in New York City.
My students range between the ages of 11 and 21 with multiple disabilities which includes non-verbal, visually and hearing impaired. Many of my students are from low income families that are subject to what the system can provide. Due to the fact that the entire school is of students with special needs, the Department of Education supplies the basic necessities.
My Project
Not all of my students learn the same way and today's classroom is comprised of students with varying learning styles and abilities. It makes sense, therefore, that providing a wide range of visual aid materials is the key to engage my students while providing them with the tools they need to learn. This type of differentiated instruction is especially important for my students who have special needs and may not be able to consume the traditional paper based lessons still used in many classrooms today.
The color printer and ink will allow consumption and creation of content through multiple modalities, not just written text. For example a student who is mild to moderate visual impairment needs lots of color visuals to understand the lesson or topic being taught.
The donation of a color printer for our classroom will allow my students to use technology and visual aids to increase their depth of understanding of new material.
A color printer will allow my students to become facilitators in their own learning with the assistance of myself and the paraprofessionals. I believe my students learn the most knowledge and increase understanding when they are actively engaged in the learning. Please help support our project and help us learn better. Thank you.
