This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our inner-city, low-income elementary school.
My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, specific learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.
They come to my classroom excited and ready to learn, but often they have trauma, anxiety, and tension in their lives that makes coming to school difficult. The typical student in my class reads at a first-grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. One hundred percent of our students are African American or Latino and benefit from free lunch. The opportunity gap and achievement gap are apparent among our student population and the student populations of more affluent areas of our school district.
My Project
Many of my students have never had the opportunity to explore art outside of using crayons and markers. By bringing them a mixed media art class, I will be able to expand their horizons and open their creativity. Too often art is overlooked in the classroom, but it is a chance for all students to showcase their skills. I teach students with learning disabilities and often the core curriculum is difficult for them to access. By allowing them the opportunity to express themselves creatively, we can bridge the learning gap and allow them to feel successful!
The students will explore the world of mixed media by creating art pieces that are as unique and special as they are.
We will use painting and drawing techniques, and by using the gelli plates to make our own prints, we will put together some magical art pieces for the students to display in our school art gallery (our classroom). By using the medium of mixed-media, students will be able to explore in a safe and free environment that allows a lot of freedom in their choices. I can't wait to get started!
