My Project

Students love to create art. They enjoy showing their differences in how they interpret what they learn through the artwork they create. The use of imagination in students' work is so inspiring. Being creative is brilliant.

Including interesting and historic art in the social studies classroom helps my students be more engaged in their learning of early American History.

Throughout the year students create Timeline Books in which they include important historic events. They add their own creativity with artwork that supports their learning and understanding of the topics.

Each week, I print a colorful 5th-grade newsletter for our 5th-grade team. This newsletter includes important dates, upcoming events, and what we are doing in each subject. Most important is the "Author at Work" section. In this section, the work of two students, one from each class, is published and shared with the parents. It is an opportunity for students to shine and publish their work while acting as reporters.

In our reading centers, students work in pairs to practice and review the weekly vocabulary. Practice cards are made for both classes on colored paper. The cards are cut and then laminated in order to use them year after year.

Students work on their reading comprehension with articles that they read and respond to through writing and the answering of questions or vocabulary work. These pieces include nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. The articles or poems are laminated so that they can be used by all the students and be protected for use by students in the future.
