Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In August, I will be teaching kindergarten in our low socio-economic district. Almost all students are on the free breakfast/free lunch program. My students are sweet kids, ages 5-6 years old.

My Kindergartners are excited to come to school each day to see what new adventures await them.

They are eager to learn and gain experiences. They love to get there hands on manipulative that help them to read and write. Making lessons colorful and full of language helps my kindergartners learn.

Like most children, my students love to sing and move and play. But, they don't have many of the things that other children have. There is no computer lab, no PTA, no teacher aides. Basic school supplies like crayons and pencils are purchased by teachers. Classroom art supplies are minimal, cardboard and paper tubes, and any supplies I purchase. I hope to provide my students with all the advantages of an inspiring, quality education with your help. Every child deserves a chance to learn with books, reading materials, computers, games, math manipulatives, writing materials and art supplies. Please help me teach and share a colorful, quality education with my children.

My Project

Art has a way of making us feel a part of a community, a class, a family. My request for paper, paint and art supplies goes beyond a simple project with color. It is a request for inspiration and hope and joy. Art transforms lives. It makes us feel, hope, care and remember. My children will be able to express themselves vibrantly. They will experiment with color and dimension. They will learn to share materials, designs, techniques, thoughts, stories, laughter and sometimes, sorrow. They will learn to care about each other and connect in a way that goes beyond paper and paint. It’s the human connection through art.

We will use these art materials in our writing, our storytelling, our science exploration, and with our new friends.

We will make characters from stories (real and fiction), letters and words for our word wall, mix colors in Venn diagrams, and learn about community helpers with our careers unit.

Everyone needs color in their lives. We need to see and touch and feel the beauty in the world. We need to explore the colors in our environment. Young children learn by doing, to help grow in abilities and confidence. By painting and stroking the brush over paper and wood, they improve fine motor skills. They will produce works of art that remind them of the stories they read or the activity they did in the schoolyard. They'll remember the feeling of that first friend asking them to play together in the yard. They'll remember the joy of being chosen, the happiness of sharing and laughing.

Our district does not have the funds in the budget to afford these basic supplies, which I consider Kindergarten necessities. Your donation will help us maximize our potential and color our world. Students learn by doing, touching and feeling! These art supplies are basic needs in a Kindergarten classroom. Thank you.
