Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a great group of moderate to severely disabled students who are also medically fragile, non-verbal, use wheelchairs, and can have difficulty with physical movement. Since my students do not produce speech biologically, they each use something called a Speech Generating Device to communicate with everyone around them. Even with all these challenges, I am amazed by the level of enthusiasm and energy each and every one of them bring to school every day.

Our focus as a classroom is to encourage community membership through communication, project based learning, and life skills.

We run a coffee shop three days a week, produce a monthly newsletter, and maintain a wheelchair accessible garden year-round (using some of the veggies in our weekly cooking class).

My Project

Like everyone else, my students value their independence. They take great pride in living life as independently as possible. Part of my job as their teacher is to think outside the box to find tools and strategies that help them achieve this most basic of human dignities. As you already know, working in a public school means we often have access to only the bare minimum of needed materials. Usually these materials are not designed with my student's very specific needs in mind and can become huge barriers to success.

One way we can help my students gain valuable life skills is to make sure the 'everyday technology' around them can interact with their existing assistive technology devices.

The Expression ET-3700 is capable of interfacing directly with my student's devices, enabling them to control what and when they publish their writing. The Expression ET-2700 is also an ecotank printer, meaning we will not have to continually buy expensive ink cartridges year after year. And as a wonderful added bonus, the students will be able to bring their monthly newsletters to life with color copies!
