My Students
My students are motivated, creative and inquisitive, and benefit academically and socially from hands-on experiences. In our urban, Title I public school we have students at all academic levels, English Language Learners, gifted and talented students, and children with special needs, most from low-income homes. All of them however, are eager to learn and would love to enhance their literacy and STEAM (Science Technology Art Engineering Math) content knowledge by becoming real live junior scientists, technologists, engineers, artists, and mathematicians.
As students reflect on photos of past projects funded by DonorsChoose.org, they cannot wait for the next project to begin!
Hands-on and visual arts projects provide ways for all of our students to demonstrate achievement even if they struggle to do so in other subject areas. I am always impressed by how much they love small-team, challenging projects where they can showcase their achievements to the whole school community.
My Project
I never realized how much the “creation” of beautiful work meant to my students until we had access to a color printer in our STEAM lab. It seems that the potential for creativity has clearly increased student motivation because they can now publish their work product and their efforts have become visually tangible to them. They are engaging in better research and have improved the organization of their information. They are also better able to collaborate with other students by sharing presentations, info-graphics, posters, charts and other digital artwork.
The bonus skills that are learned through printing work product have given my students more opportunity to develop basic 21st century competencies.
They are becoming better critical thinkers and problem solvers. They are communicating more with peers to produce group projects. In other words, when they have the tools to display their work, they rise to the occasion. What a great way for students to think about the environment and societal problems and work on finding solutions! That is why I am requesting color toner cartridges for our printer. I want students to be able to hold and share projects. I want to nurture motivation, discovery and creativity and I just want my students to feel proud of their efforts and continue to grow to be the leaders of tomorrow.
