This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Art is the lost art" in school. With constant budget cuts, and loss of funding the arts are the first to go. Usually, my students get one 45 minute block of art a week. I saw how excited and joyful students were to have art and I want to incorporate art into our daily practice.

My school is a growing school.

Every year we add a grade so we need supplies to accommodate our growing building. We have an extremely talented art teacher, but she is spread very thin. I want to extend the learning that she does with the students in my classroom since I have more time and flexibility to do so. The students are eager to work with paint, pastels and clay. It is endearing to watch the students as they create and express themselves. Students are from a low-socioeconomic/working class community. Parents struggle with being able to provide basic school supplies for the year so there is very little room to contribute to art supplies.

My Project

Students will use basic art supplies like crayons, colored pencils, and markers. In addition, they will use paint and clay to create authentic art work that allows them to utilize gross and fine motor skills, develop visual-spatial skills, critical thinking skills, and cultural appreciation for art. I plan to create an art center in the classroom as part of a rotational center. The students will have an opportunity to freely express themselves artistically and to extend the learning activities taught by the art teacher. Some of the activities we plan to do is paint with water color, draw/sketch, and to use art materials in a safe and responsible manner.

The donations to this project will improve the classroom by providing students an opportunity to broaden their educational experience.

There is so much emphasis on Common Core reading and math that we have lost an appreciation for the arts and the educational value it has. Research has shown that art helps with language development, fine and gross motor skills, and critical thinking skills. It will change my students' lives by allowing them to be creative, expressive thinkers and risk-takers.
