Art enhances academic learning in my classroom! We show our knowledge of history, science, mathematical content, and stories through our production of art pieces. I teach fourth graders in an area where parents simply cannot provide "extra" materials, and art supplies get left out.

Students in my class get excited when they come up with an idea and see me work actively to make it a reality. Recently my students wanted to do a Poetry Cafe', so we memorized poems and poured hot chocolate listening to our recitations amongst parents and guests. Now, they are wanting to put on an art show. I don't have the kind of supplies to make that a reality, and I can't stand to say no.

With the supplies I'm requesting (markers, colored pencils, water colors, and drawing paper), we'll be able to expand our expressions of understanding in the content areas. Kids will get the chance to create a mural showing their understanding of the 13 colonies. They'll get to see their classmate's understanding of fractions and electricity come to life in living color.

The kids I work with struggle with reading and writing, but push themselves to explain their works of art. They can articulate concepts that they've drawn in ways that surprise me with their insight into challenging topics. Your support of this project will deepen their understanding of key concepts and allow them to enjoy learning more.
