My students need colored pencils to improve subject mastery. They stay in the classroom and all 80 of our children use them, so they wear out quickly! COLOR US BRILLIANT!
By the end of this school year, I want our kiddos to be proud of what they have accomplished in 6th grade. They will exit the grade with a full-color notebook detailing the basics of English Language Arts that they will be able use as a reference all the way through high school.
Many of our kids are struggling to make ends meet.
A child told me this morning that she would be late to school this week because their power is going to be cut off and she has to stay with her grandma who lives farther away. These are children who are dedicated to learning but are not always able to access the tools they need to amplify their success in the classroom. They are good natured kiddos who just need a little extra help from you!
My Project
We will use the colored pencils to draw attention to important aspects of notes in our interactive notebooks as well as color-code the notes. Everything about similes will be in purple, for example. Everything about character traits might be in orange. My kids have ownership of their learning when they can choose how their notes will look and how their information is presented; my goal with this project is to give them that opportunity to own their work, to feel in control of their own learning.
With these simple pieces of wood and pigment, our kids will have the chance again to feel in charge of their own educations.
Yes, I follow a curriculum, but we complete it in unconventional ways. I seek to bring color and light into their worlds, and the simplest way to do that is to provide them with the tools they need to use the colors on paper. Then we can grow from there.
