Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Language learners and under-served students have the right to social equality! Walt Disney once called the minds of children "our greatest national resource." With proper guidance, this quote can pertain to all children within our nation.

Have you ever had to wonder where your next meal will come from?

Or where you will lay your head to sleep at night? These are just some of the challenges facing some of my students, yet they continue to come to my class to try to learn about history. They put their best foot forward and try to become better readers, writers and speakers. Many of them come from immigrant families and do not get much educational support at home, as their parents may not be familiar with the English language. Many of them, personally, are English Learners who are only now beginning to grasp the language. In spite of obstacles, they press on and want to learn to be better students and citizens. I admire many of my students. I am not sure how much I effort I would put forth if I had to worry about things like hunger and/or homelessness. Yet these kids stand up to the challenges they have been handed in their young lives. They don't all succeed, but those who do truly are what inspiration means to me.

My Project

I have requested students buy multi-colored pens so that we can color code paragraphs. As "historians" there is a pattern to the writing I and the new Common Core Standards require from students, but many of my students have not learned the basics of writing needed to meet the Common Core Standards. By color-coding their sentences, they will be able to familiarize themselves with the job that each sentence has within the paragraph. Once they know this, using a rubric or checklist, students will be able to self-edit, peer-edit, and know exactly what I, as the teacher, am looking for in their writing.

I have asked students to bring their color coded pens to class.

Some have, while others don't have the financial resources to buy school supplies. I have supplied what I can, but my means are limited as well. Our Title I office has supplied me with minimal supplies, but they too are in a situation where there is only so much they can provide us with. I thank you, in advance, for any support you can offer our children to help their literacy and our posterity.
