My students at LMAAC are truly exceptional! They are full of questions and excitement, especially when it comes to the four-hundred-year-old unsolved disappearance of the Roanoke Colony, England's first colony in North America.
Coming to school each day and having students take chances, think outside the box, and grow socially, personally, and academically make LMAAC a wonderful place to be!
My Project
In 1587, the first English colony settled in Roanoke, Virginia. What happened to the 117 men, women, and children that disappeared? In the book "Solving the Mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke", students will become their own detectives through class activities and debates. Did these people die of famine, disease, or were they killed by the Native Americans or Spaniards, or was it something else?
Then in 1609, Native Americans surrounded a colony in Jamestown, Virginia.
It wasn't easy for these European Americans when they had to rely only on what was inside their walls, keeping them away from the outside world. Students (Teams) will learn how to keep their colony alive by the decisions made and overall willingness to contribute to their (team's) survival during what is known as the "Starving Winter".
