My Students

My classroom is place where I encourage reading. I want students to be life-long learners, and I believe reading is the way to ignite this process. My juniors will end the year with a college application project, and this text will connect right with it.

My students are juniors and seniors.

We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is on free or reduced lunch. By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. Many of my students are curious about the choices that will be made in their last two years of high school; they often come to me for guidance and direction on the choices they face. They are information hungry when it comes to their futures.

My Project

These books will serve as part of a college application unit that I want to end my 11th grade English class with this year. I will work in conjunction with our college adviser to create a unit that allows students to research institutions of higher education, complete college applications, write an application essay, and make a plan for the future. These texts will serve as a reading during that unit for students planning on college to provide common background and a basis for discussions. It will also give students an understanding that they do not have to go into debt in order to go to college.

These texts will help students plan their future and post-secondary learning experience.

The young man that wrote this book, completed college without having to go into student loan debt. He lays out his plan for students to complete college debt free. I hope that students will look at this text and consider their options to complete college without student loan debt. If I can help make that happen for even a portion of my students, I will have changed lives with your help.
