My students need two Chromebook computers that are capable of handling the newest Internet applications in order to prepare for, apply for, and be accepted into college.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine that every time you explored applying for college you saw the words "apply online," and you were confronted with one of your greatest academic challenges - the technology gap. Imagine you don't have access to the Internet or that your computer is so old that it can't process applications.
My students attend the poorest school in a poor district.
Over half of our students' parents did not graduate high school, let alone attend college. My AVID seniors are part of a program of 250 kids. They have worked hard to complete university eligibility requirements despite a neighborhood rife with gang violence, drugs, and crime. They have watched their friends, and sometimes family members drop out of school and take the wrong path. Yet, with support, they have pushed to take classes like Advanced Placement Calculus.
Only about 25% of the school's students complete their university eligibility requirements, and this AVID class is a part of that 25%. All of them will be first-generation college students - if they can get through the application process. As students fill out their applications, I have seen how incredibly low their family incomes are. Resources at home go for food, rent, and sometimes clothes instead of a good computer or quality Internet service.
My Project
The College Dreams Lab was a project started with the help of DonorsChoose.org. Two Chromebooks are used daily by students who are trying to complete college applications and stay up-to-date with their various college accounts. These days, they are checking for college acceptances. They work to develop personal statements, submit applications, and research schools. Once they are accepted, students continue to need computers to manage the endless "To Do" items for each school they've applied to. Nearly every item is accessed over the Internet.
In essence, they use the two Chromebooks to help resolve the technology gap. However, the two existing computers are not enough. Daily, I have to turn students away or tell them "all the computers are being used." Unfortunately, other students who need computers have to find another way. I bring my personal computer from home so the kids can have more access, but there are almost 70 seniors in my program and nearly 200 ninth through eleventh graders that need them.
Your donations of two more Chromebooks to the College Dreams Lab will open the doors to higher education for hundreds of students who would otherwise have been kept out by the technology gap.
You will help low-income students be the first in their families to go to a university, and, as most of them aspire to do, come back and transform their community. By donating to the College Dreams Lab, you will allow students to realize their fullest potential and develop the access their parents never had.
