Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and all students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. Thirty percent of the students are English language learners, and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.
Our students should have the same opportunities as any other student in the country.They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way.
As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased, and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.
We just had a senior commitment day, where the seniors officially commit to the colleges they are going to attend. At graduation, we want to honor some of our highflying seniors withPBIS incentives. This includes those who made honor, roll, most improved on attendance, and other accomplishments that they have made during their four years of high school. We want to make sure the rewards are directly things that they need for college, including laptops and graphing calculators.
The best part is, it's not too late for some of the seniors to be in the running to receive these PBIS incentives, their attendance, and GPAs are super close right now, so many of them could definitely make even greater improvements during the last two months of school.
