Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Miss, have any students from our school ever gone to an Ivy League school?" "What are some HBCUs that I should consider for college?" These are some of the many questions my juniors and seniors ask as they begin thinking about the college application process.

My students are ethnically diverse individuals who come from economically marginalized communities.

They care about their communities and the state of the world, often asking questions and sharing experiences. For many students, they will be the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting a variety of books to guide my seniors through the process of writing their personal statement. Every year, students struggle with this piece of writing -- searching for inspiration, ideas, and what exactly to write. The books requested will help students conquer this challenge by providing them with examples and steps to take. I am also requesting a variety of college pennants representing the colleges and universities past students from our school have attended. These will be displayed in the hallways to inspire students of all grades to research different colleges and to know that they too can obtain opportunities for higher education. I included a selection of pennants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities that our alumni have attended to highlight these schools.

Most of my students are the first in their families to even think about attending college and providing them with encouragement, inspiration, and support is paramount in their success.
