My Students

Every year, I have a new bright-eyed bunch of twelfth graders that are anxious and eager to take on the world beyond high school. But they are scared and they don't know how and where to begin in the college application process. This is when they look to me for guidance.

I have been teaching English at an inner-city high school for the last eight years and am deeply committed to my work with the students.

I thoroughly enjoy working with the youth to help them develop not only their English Language Skills, but also developing their life skills like communication and organization. I know that they have to be well-rounded to be remain competitive in "real world". In the last eight years, I have taught every English grade level, AVID, theater and study skills. The last few years have been dedicated to teaching twelfth grade English. My units vary from global issues, reading plays and analyzing world poetry, but since it is twelfth grade, I try to dedicate one unit to college and career readiness. This requires me to stay up-to-date with information while I lead them through writing their personal statements and navigating through all the different college requirements.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are a variety of college review books and application preparation guides: five texts on the current 2015 college requirements, five books on the college admission process, two on writing a quality personal statement, and one the different majors available to undergraduates. These books will allow me to continue learning about the various needs and demands of different colleges, which seem to change pretty regularly. I want my students to remain competitive and these resources are usually not something my students families can afford, I want to be the best college application resource for them. With my knowledge, I will be able to guide each student to specific schools that meet their interests and show them what they need to do submit a quality application.

I feel like it's safe to say that most teachers believe when their students apply and get admitted into a good college, his/her work in the classroom in validated.

Although I know that one student's college acceptance is not because of the work I did in this one unit alone, but it is the combination of the efforts of this student's former teachers, the support of his/her family, and of course the work the student does, but I would like to honor all that work in the last stretch with this unit.
